Forward Detectors and Luminosity Measurement at ATLAS
Forward detectors at the ATLAS experiment are intended for the
ATLAS luminosity measurement, soft QCD and diffractive physics.
At the early LHC running stage the ALFA trackers in the Roman pots
will measure elastic rates to calculate the absolute luminosity
and calibrate the LUCID detector which then will measure the
ATLAS luminosity.
To measure central exclusive Higgs and dilepton processes the
near-to-beam detectors of the AFP project are planned to be
installed in-between the LHC magnets at 220m and 420m downstream
the ATLAS interaction point. These detectors reach a very small
proton scattering angle and designed as a tracking and time of
flight systems.
